Chapter 155: Chapter 155: “Field Evacuation Specialist”
'Oh god! What is it now?!' Kain didn't mean to sound insensitive, but this entire day had consisted of crisis, after crisis, after crisis. He was emotionally drained. All the joy from receiving a large influx of GP each day had completely faded. The sun was still high up in the sky and he felt like he was going to collapse at any moment.
However, he quickly snapped out of it when it clicked that some of those screams sounded surprising young…childlike.
"Shit!" He yelled turning to face into the city. He could see some of the guards abandoning their posts to run to the core of the city. But he couldn't blame them.
During havoc caused by the green-grade spider taking over some of the guards, a many spiritual creatures had managed to sneak past the holes in their defence and were now attacking the regular civilians.
Kain could see some plumes of smoke rising up from a nearby residential area and the occasional explosion followed by screams.
Kain sent 5 of his Vespirae guards, into the city with instructions to hunt as many of the invading spiritual creatures as possible, with extra priority being placed on the residential areas.
However, after many of the guards had been taken out of commission due to injuries, and some had abandoned their posts to protect the civilians, the defence at the wall was now stretched even more thin. Especially since, like Kain, many other guards and students remaining at the wall had still sent one of their contracts into the city to defend the civilians.
'God! When will this day end?!'
---------------------------------
Contrary to Kain's worries, Bridge's assigned post was quite far away from danger. He had been given the important task of acting as a "Field Evacuation Specialist"…which is an important sounding title he had made up for himself since he was upset at not being placed in a position to actually battle the beast-tide.
Instead, the professors had deemed him more suitable for the role of a paramedic. Lady is one of the fastest contracts that can also support a larger human body as well as many spiritual creatures so that they can receive timely care.
Additionally, Bridge had never skipped out on training either of his contracts and had received praise from several professors and training instructors for his diligence. This diligence has led to Princess having some of the most fine control over her ice-attribute energy.
Therefore, over the past few days Princess has become more and more skilled at stopping bleeding using her ice-control to prevent excess bleeding for patients that can't receive medical attention right away.
In short, Bridge was never in any real danger over the past few days.
That is until now.
Currently, Lady was speeding towards him with an unconscious spiritual creature on its back that looked like a yellow lynx.
And close behind them was a flying spiritual creature that looked like a hawk. At first, Bridge was thinking that it was a contracted spiritual creature of one of the guards. Perhaps it shares the same beast-tamer as the lynx and wanted to ensure it arrived safely to receive medical attention? Or maybe it was carrying an urgent message from the frontline?
That's what he thought until Lady narrowly dodged a lightning bolt sent from it while ensuring that the lynx remained balanced on her back.
Bridge's eyes widened. "What the hell?" He shouted as Lady swerved and ducked again, narrowly avoiding another bolt of lightning. He was assigned to the medical center in the northern edge of the city. It was the gate that had the second most casualties after the main gate, but it was the furthest distance from where the breach was at the southern gate.
It was unlikely that it had managed to arrive from the southern gate already. Therefore it is more likely that like the breach at the southern gate and the main gate to the wild in the east, which Bridge didn't currently know about, the northern gate was also experiencing some spiritual creatures breaking through the guards' defense.
Without hesitation, Bridge leaped into action. He directed Lady to a nearby alleyway to momentarily shield them from the hawk's attacks. "We need to get this Lynx to safety, now!" Bridge ordered as he quickly assessed the unconscious creature. It had no visible wounds or bleeding on it, so he couldn't determine the reason for its current unconscious state. It could be poisoning or even a concussion?
"Lady, keep moving!"
He directed Princess to target the joint of one of the hawk's wings. Thankfully it was only at orange-grade and due to Princess only targeting a key joint in a small area, rather than trying to freeze the entire wing, she was able to successfully send it crashing to the ground despite the level difference between them.
Bridge was on the ground waiting to send a heavy blow to its head with his heavy two-handed sword.
Splat
After shaking off the gruesome mixture of blood and brains on his sword, he chased after Lady in the direction she'd headed off to in order to deliver the lynx to an actual medical professional.
Bridge and Princess eventually arrived at a medical tent located at a safer distance from the chaos and was well-stocked with medical supplies. Shockingly, outside of the tent were 3 dead corpses that were not there when he'd left.
Thankfully, Bridge could see that the lynx had already been safely transported to one of the available beds.
Just then, the medical tent's head healer, an elderly woman with a calm demeanour, approached. "We'll take over from here," she said firmly. "There have been more reports of wild spiritual creatures being seen in the city. You and your contracts need to focus on protecting this area."
It seems that Bridge will finally realize his wish to be part of the action. Although, it wasn't quite in the way he had imagined…
