Chapter 60 – Lunch Break
It’s probably because her injury hurt, she was listening seriously for the next two classes and didn’t harass me as usual.
Does harassing me require more concentration than listening in class?
If she’s not bothering me, I wont bother her. Then again, she was already bandaged so I’ll let her off today.
During lunch, the class leader said that since Xiao Qin was injured, she shouldn’t go into the crowded cafeteria. She asked what Xiao Qin wanted to eat and planned to get something delivered.
It seemed Xiao Qin wanted to plead me to eat with her. I ignored her and walked right out of the classroom.
There were some females whispering:
“How could he be so cold to his childhood friend!”
“Xiao Qin, is Ye Lin really your boyfriend? It’s a lie, right?”
“I’ve always felt that he can’t match up to our Xiao Qin!”
They were having a lively discussion and completely didn’t take themselves to be strangers, they acted like they knew Xiao Qin for a lifetime.
The class leader didn’t say anything, the class leader never participates in these gossipy discussions.
Someone even had a malicious conjecture and said that Xiao Qin fell during the flag raising ceremony because I deliberately tripped her.
Loud Mouth unexpectedly defended me:
“Stop speaking shit! Ye Lin would never do something like that! Isn’t that no different from those hoodlums that bully other people? Am I right, class leader?”
The class leader hesitated for a bit, but only softly said: “I don’t know.”
I didn’t want to continue to listen so I walked towards the cafeteria in large strides.
After eating, I found Xiao Qin resting on her desk. In order to not to push on her wound, she was facing right and laying on her arm.
She had a pair of unopened disposable chopsticks on her desk, I could roughly guess what she had for lunch.
It was seafood fried rice, right? In the food street behind the school, only that store’s seafood fried rice uses such high-class disposable chopsticks, they also give extra pairs in case it’s not enough.
Xiao Qin was indeed a glutton, she can’t stop herself from eating, even when injured. It was the class leader and them who got her this, right?
I looked up to find the class leader and found that the class leader was standing beside Loud Mouth and Little Smart, she was discussing something with her loyal followers.
Little Smart was sitting on her own spot and Loud Mouth was sitting on the desk, only the class leader was standing.
It was already lunch break, there were clearly so many empty spots around you, why don’t you just find a seat and sit down? Why do you gotta have so high standards for yourself?
I’ve always felt that Shu Sha stood more than she sat, was it because her hair was too long and it was hard to take care of when she sat?
Having said that, I can’t believe she dares grow her hair so long! If it was like the naughty class when I was in elementary school, there would probably be numerous boys who pulled on her hair for fun!
I was suddenly very curious, did Shu Sha have long hair when she was younger as well? Was she the class leader when she was younger? Was she ever bullied by boys because of her long hair?
At this time, it seems like Loud Mouth told a joke, after telling it she started laughing out loud first, although the class leader didn’t laugh as exaggerated as she did, but her brows relaxed and looked happy.
I realized it was a good opportunity to apologize, Loud Mouth might even speak up for me.
I put both hands into my pockets and pretended to unintentionally walk over.
I may have looked too unnatural, even Loud Mouth stopped talking and turned around to stare at me.
“What are you coming over here for? Are you looking for a beating?”
Loud Mouth spoke to me unpleasantly.
She’s the type of person who’s violent in front of me, yet speak up for me behind my back. The more violent she is with me, the more I want to laugh.
I responded with a smile: “Nothing much, just walking around, it seems like you told a funny joke, why don’t you tell me as well?”
Seeing me come over, the class leader hesitated and wanted to walk away silently, but Loud Mouth held the class leader’s wrist.
“Class leader, where are you going? You afraid of Ye Lin, or something? He might have even come to apologize!”
She said while giving me a look.
I gratefully lowered my head to Loud Mouth, but as I was thinking of apologizing, I didn’t know how I should do it.
Since the first time I was bullied by Little Tyrant when I was 6, what life taught me was to never lower my head (not including the time when I just lowered my head to Loud Mouth).
Besides, what happened during language class on Friday, wasn’t even completely my fault.
Both the study committee member Gong CaiCai and number one loyal dog glasses bro were partially at fault.
Thinking over it carefully, it was all Shu Sha’s little brother’s fault! It’s because of her little brother that she lacked sleep and had so much anger bottled up, that’s why she lashed out at me!
I even saved him the night before, he’s biting the hand that saves him!
Thinking about this, I don’t want to apologize anymore. Even if I do apologize, I have to drag Shu Sha’s little brother into it.
So I turned around to ask Shu Sha:
“Class leader, is your little brother called Shu Ke?”
The class leader was stunned, she first had an expression of doubt, then of disdain. Before she was able to speak, Loud Mouth said from the side:
“Your brother is called Shu Ke! Your entire family’s called Shu Ke!” (TN: From what I gathered, it’s a reference to a character that flew a plane, which in Chinese can also mean someone who loses concentration easily)
Seeing that I had no sincerity in my apology, Loud Mouth chewed me out and reached out to pinch me. As I was afraid of her lobster pincers, I bolted away.
At least I gathered that Shu Sha’s younger brother is called Shu Zhe. He’s a student in the first year class 4, he has good grades and all his teachers praise him for his smarts.
He is pretty smart, all he thinks about is how to sell out his sister, what a precocious child!
After I returned to my seat, Xiao Qin was still laying immobile on her desk. She was breathing like a small animal, it seems she’s having a good nap.
I was very annoyed, I put both my feet on my desk and put both hands behind my head to mull over some stuff.
But, the class leader came towards me, alone.
She didn’t walk too fast or slow, it didn’t seem like she was coming over to get even. Her gait had a leader-like presence.
I acted like I didn’t know she was coming over and remained in my bad student posture.
“Ye Lin, I want to talk to you.”
The class leader’s voice was very gentle, maybe she doesn’t want to wake up Xiao Qin who was next to me.
“What do you want to talk about?’
I tilted my neck and looked up at the class leader.
There was no anger or fear in her black eyes, she looked at me with a serene face.
“Ye Lin, if there’s something you resent me for, take it out on me, don’t bully my brother, okay?”
Ah? Did you think I was going to bully your brother? Because you took it out on me, so you think I’m going to take it out on your brother? Aren’t I too despicable in your eyes? Your brother is the one you should be on guard against!
“Hey, class leader, don’t think too highly of your little brother...”
Hearing that I started to speak ill of her brother, the class leader’s expression changed instantly. The bible often relates God’s appearance to lightning (TN: Matthew 28:3). I’ve always thought of it as nonsense, are you telling me that God looks like a high tension power line? But after witnessing Shu Sha’s expression, I realised that her current expression can only be described as lightning!
“Ye Lin, If you promise not to trouble my little brother, I can even apologize to you. If you’re still not satisfied, I-I still have a shotgun at home...”
Are you fucking apologizing or threatening me! There’s a limit to how much you dote on your little brother! You gave up on your plan on apologizing to me so quickly, and if I don’t promise, you’re going to ignore the laws and blow my brains out?
I waved my hands to get the class leader to stop talking.
“Whatever your brother is called, Shu Ke or Shu Zhe, I won’t bully him, you misjudged me.”
I really wanted to say “You also misjudged your brother”, but I didn’t say it in the end.
I’m an outsider so I don’t have any rights to meddle with their relationship, right?
I just hope that Shu Zhe doesn’t do anything too cruel to his sister.
At this time, the preparatory bells for the first afternoon class rang, the class leader returned to her seat with some regret. Before she left, she looked at me as if she still wasn’t sure.
The preparatory bells woke Xiao Qin up. Xiao Qin drowsily watched the class leader walk away from me and her eyes suddenly flashed.
“It finally happened! Ye Lin classmate, the class leader came over to speak ill of me, right! It has to be!“
I looked at Xiao Qin with disdain.
“W-what did the class leader say about me? Although the shrimp fried rice she bought me was very delicious, but that doesn’t change the setting where she’s the antagonist!”
You’re the antagonist, you don’t posses any attributes protagonists should have! Coupling you with the clown in Batman doesn’t feel wrong at all!
Seeing that I wasn’t saying anything, Xiao Qin made an expression like something terrible happened.
“Was Ye Lin classmate already bewitched? What did the class leader say to you? Did she say... that I have very small breasts?”
“A-although her’s is bigger, but Ye Lin classmate can’t be bought over by breasts!”
Xiao Qin looked like she was about to cry.
“I-I’ll drink lots of milk every day, eat a lot of papaya, until Ye Lin classmate is satisfied! Don’t fall into the class leader’s trap so easily!”
If Xiao Qin wasn’t injured, I really just wanted to press her face on her desk to shut her up.
It’s a good thing that its old man Zhang’s language class next, she’ll finally settle down, right?
